Did You Know?

Kondō Yūzō was the teacher of Imanishi Masaya, whose jar is also in the CMA collection, 1992.98.

Description

Kondō Yūzō's mature work combined classical East Asian decorative motifs, such as pine, bamboo, and plum, executed with Western-style brushwork on traditional Asian forms. His pomegranates signify fertility and prosperity.
Squat, white porcelain, cylindrical vase that narrows at the rim and depicts blue leaves and fruit on the upper half. Streaking blue lines outline clusters of thin leaves, shaded in with a lighter blue. Two circular fruit hang from the leaves with dollops of blue visible against the lighter blue shaded fruit. A solid blue line runs around the rim and base.
