This set of four colorful hanging scrolls may have been used in an outdoor Buddhist ritual to evoke heavenly blessings.

Description

This set of four colorful hanging scrolls may have been used in an outdoor Buddhist ritual to evoke heavenly blessings. Each hanging scroll bears four different characters: tiger, dragon, whistle, and recite. Traditionally, tiger and dragon belong to the four directional guards, respectively west and east.
A hanging scroll depicts horizontal registers within a red and gold floral border. Near the top, a large black calligraphic character sits inside a circular frame. Below, a lobed central panel features a golden dragon over mountains and waves. Two blue and green lion-like creatures occupy the bottom section. Pink flowers, swirling clouds, and phoenixes fill the surrounding cream paper background, layering symbolic motifs in a dense, vertical composition.
