Skiöld was raised on the coast of Sweden and the influence of the sea was expressed in rhythmic
patterns printed in relief and a delicate, ethereal sense of color. During a 1970 trip to Japan the inspiration of nature and the simplicity of Asian art also affected her work. Photographs she took there were transferred to etching plates to illustrate Zen Gardens where they, and the embossed designs, echo verbal references to stones, sand, sea birds, and sky. The poems (by James Kirkup) and images enhance each other producing a satisfying whole.
