Description

Santo Tomás Chichicastenango, a mountain town at an altitude of 6,447 feet, is 87 miles northwest of Guatemala City and is the commercial center of the Quiché region. Known for its traditional K’iche’ Maya culture, it is the site of a large market where vendors sell everything from animals and tools to handicrafts and flowers--a colorful outdoor spectacle that attracts natives and tourists alike.
A vertically oriented color woodcut in muted maroon, blue, and yellow depicts simplified figures with tan skin tones in a marketplace. In the foreground center, a woman in a maroon top and dark skirt faces right, balancing a long tray on her head. To her left, another woman stands in a light blue shirt. On the right, a yellow path leads toward a pink building. Thin white outlines separate the color blocks throughout the composition.
