Description

Hewit prepared carefully for the lithograph Old Man, as this is one of four drawings of the sitter in Sketchbook No. 1.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on pale paper depicts a gabled house with a small chimney at the center, set behind vertical scribbles of grass. To the right is a smaller peaked building. On the left, diagonal lines form a crisscross structure. In the background, quick, jagged strokes suggest trees or hills. The minimalist composition is rendered with light, rapid strokes against a plain background.
