Baumann carefully chose printing papers. He preferred fine linen or cotton papers with a toothier surface. Slightly textured paper with hills and valleys, if lightly inked and printed with a minimum of pressure, produces random speckles of unprinted white paper across the printed image (notice the white speckles in the blue sky of Salt Creek), impressionistic effects resembling the bright light and airiness in landscapes.
