Description

Baumann produced an oil painting of sheep for an insomniac friend and then executed a color woodcut also illustrating the proverb that counting sheep helps in falling asleep. The artist relied on a photograph for the composition of sheep on a hillside; the black rectangular background alludes to the source. Set against aluminum leaf, the black shape becomes an object placed on a shiny field.
