Gustave Baumann

(American, born Germany, 1881–1971)

Watercolor over graphite

Support: Antique laid paper (Bergisch Gladbach?)

Image: 23.9 x 28.2 cm (9 7/16 x 11 1/8 in.); Sheet: 29.8 x 32.6 cm (11 3/4 x 12 13/16 in.)

Gift of Ann Baumann 2005.467

Baumann, filled with wanderlust, left Brown County, Indiana, in early 1917 and headed east. He spent the year traveling and working in Wyoming, New York; New York City; Boston; and Provincetown, Massachusetts, where this watercolor was made. Notice how the artist tested colors and made a preliminary sketch of the man pulling the wagon in the upper right margin.
