This is one of 650,000 impressions printed of this piece by Robert Rauschenberg. It was issued in the December 30, 1979, edition of Tropic magazine, the Sunday supplement in the Miami Herald newspaper. Art Director Leon Rosenblatt asked Rauschenberg to make the artwork and invited the artist to pull from the paper’s photo archive for source material. In what was deemed the “world’s largest edition of an original lithograph,” Rauschenberg took the foundational ideas of Pop Art to their logical conclusion: the mass distribution of an artist’s work that self-referentially responds to the aesthetics of mass media.
