This mourning woman with draped and bowed head decorates the tomb in Cleveland’s Lake View Cemetery of Charles Augustus Otis Sr. (1827–1905), a prominent businessman who served as the city’s mayor in 1873–74.
Sculpted at the beginning of the 20th century, the figure’s pose, drapery, and wreath refer to ancient classical sculpture, while her dress evokes 19th-century fashion.
