Description

Lyon got to know and photographed the inhabitants of Clifton Street in Uptown, a tough, Chicago neighborhood populated by recent immigrants from central Appalachia. “The pictures,” he wrote, “do not ask you to ‘help’ these people, but something much more difficult; to be briefly and intensely aware of their existence, an existence as real and significant as your own.”
