Description

Born and raised in Russia, Vishniac moved to Germany after the revolution. A Jew, he moved to France to escape the Nazis, and in 1940 immigrated to New York where he began to do portrait work to earn a living. In 1941 he photographed the acclaimed Russian Jewish painter Marc Chagall who, like Vishniac, had recently arrived in New York fleeing the Nazis.
