Description

Each of the prints in the series Thirty-six Elegant Selections features a woman from a different time period, as befits an artist who was interested in history painting. Most of the prints are set in the Edo period (1615–1868). Mizuno Toshikata was a favored student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892), and took over his post as a newspaper illustrator.
A vertically oriented woodblock print depicts a woman and man catching fireflies at night. On our left, the woman with light skin tone wears a patterned lavender kimono and holds a fan. Facing her, a man with light skin tone kneels before a black box, reaching toward yellow dots scattered throughout the air. In the background, silhouetted figures stand on a hill near water. Calligraphy appears along the left margin and in a cartouche.
