Description

Taken at the height of the Depression when he was 19, this image shows a world Rosenblum knew intimately. One of five children of immigrant parents, he grew up in a three-room cold-water flat in one of the tenement buildings that filled New York’s Lower East Side. Because apartments were crowded, much of life was lived on the street, providing ample material for his camera.
A horizontally oriented black-and-white photograph depicts four women with light skin tones gathered near baby carriages in front of a chain-link fence. On the left, one woman leans over a carriage while another sits on a crate. On the right, a third woman sits with her arm extended toward an older woman standing nearby. Behind them, white laundry hangs on the fence near a sign reading "NOTICE NO DUMPING OR TRESPASSING."
