Did You Know?

Andrews first studied art through a correspondence course while working at an automobile factory.

Description

Canadian-born artist Sybil Andrews was part of a group of artists in London who worked avidly in linocut printmaking beginning in the 1920s. Prints such as this one were made by carving into a malleable linoleum block, resulting in smooth, decisive lines. In this image, Andrews used this style to evoke a sense of rapid movement as a row of jockeys on horseback actively leap over a barrier.
