Gum tempera and gold on cotton cloth
47.6 x 37.5 cm (18 3/4 x 14 3/4 in.)
Purchase and partial gift from the Catherine and Ralph Benkaim Collection; Severance and Greta Millikin Purchase Fund 2018.173
The subject is wearing toe-rings on his right foot.
The portrait is of a man clad in a sumptuous gold and maroon robe sitting on an armchair in a carpeted interior hung with green glass lamps. European influence is also notable in the front-facing depiction of the subject, instead of the profile-facing depiction in traditional Rajasthani portraiture. The person appears to be from a wealthy background as he wears pearl and emerald necklaces and gold bracelets.
