Did You Know?

Bruce Davidson was the Central Park Conservancy’s first artist in residence.

Description

From 1992 to 1994, Davidson made daily visits to New York’s Central Park, attempting to portray it in all seasons and times of day. His photographs capture not just flora, fauna, and humans, but also the park’s democratizing character: there people of all races, social classes, sexual orientations, and ages mixed freely and openly. The images also explore the relationship between the urban world and nature.
A vertically oriented black-and-white photograph depicts two children with dark hair and medium skin tones near a pond. On our right, a girl sits in the crook of a textured tree trunk, wearing a dark top, light skirt, and white sneakers while looking at us. To our left, a boy stands under hanging willow branches with hands on his hips, gazing toward our right. Dark trees and water reflections fill the background.
