Did You Know?

Salut de Schiaparelli was created to promote a perfume with that name released by Paris designer Elsa Schiaparelli.

Description

Ilse Bing employed solarization here to evoke an otherworldly, surrealistic feeling. The procedure involves quickly re-exposing a photographic print to light during the development process, before the image is fixed. The result is a partial or total reversal of tone, so areas that are dark become light and vice versa. Bing considered darkroom work a final stage in a photograph’s creation.
A vertically oriented solarized black-and-white photograph depicts a woman with a light skin tone reclining in profile facing our left. She has her eyes closed and mouth slightly open, with wavy hair flowing toward the top right. She wears a light-toned, textured sleeveless top. Long-stemmed white lilies and dark leaves surround her against a dark background. Solarized white outlines define the edges of the lily petals and the woman's hair.
