Description

In the series A Girl and Her Room, Matar photographed each young woman “in the personal space she was curating for herself, where she was exploring her own sense of identity,” says the artist. The sitter’s bedroom becomes almost a thought bubble of the girl’s mind and self-image.
A horizontal inkjet print depicts Christilla, a woman with light skin tone, reclining in a black chair against a bright pink wall. Her legs are elevated toward our left as she gazes forward. Behind her, a three-panel screen features Marilyn Monroe. To our left, a television sits atop a media shelf; to our right, a pink bra hangs from a door. Green clogs, shoes, and a stuffed hippo rest on the floor.
