Did You Know?

Dave Heath was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as a machine-gunner during the Korean War.

Description

Heath, who taught himself photography while in high school, made portraits of his fellow soldiers in Korea. Throughout his career, his images reflected, in the words of one writer, an “alienated but tender view of humanity.” That alienation may have stemmed from his abandonment as an infant by his parents, who left him to be raised in orphanages. The subject of this portrait, Frank Drobneck, survived the war and died at age 87 in 2020. Heath died at 85 in 2016.
