Did You Know?

Although she never had any children of her own, children played an important role in Ellen Auerbach’s life.

Description

When Auerbach moved to Palestine fleeing the Nazis in 1933, she opened a studio specializing in children’s portraits. She emigrated to the United States in 1937, where she again made a living photographing children and doing freelance work for magazines. In 1966, at age 60, she launched a totally new career as an educational therapist for children with disabilities. This photograph demonstrates that even in her personal artistic work, children remained a captivating subject for her.
