Did You Know?

Cal Kowal’s portraits of Anne Noggle echo her direct approach to the sitter and willingness to get too close.

Description

Anne Noggle and Cal Kowal were friends. Both were professors of photography for decades, Noggle at the University of New Mexico and Kowal at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. When shooting Noggle, Kowal allowed her to perform in front of his camera as she performed in front of her own in a series of self-portraits. Kowal’s serial portraits of Noggle pay homage to and complement Noggle’s own art.
