Did You Know?

“I was thinking,” said Hiroshi Sugimoto in describing the genesis of his Seascapes series, “what would be the most unchanged scene on the surface of the earth?”

Description

Hiroshi Sugimoto journeys to locations around the world to produce what appears, at first glance, to be essentially the same picture: the horizon falls exactly in the vertical center of the paper, dividing the page into equal segments of sky and water. There are no signs of human presence. Is the passage of time exposed when one has the opportunity, as in this portfolio, to examine 50 of Sugimoto’s Seascapes side by side? Or are time, movement, and difference obscured?
