Despite the advent of mechanized vehicles, horses still played a significant role during World War I.

Description

André Kertész happened across this accident while walking through the fields around Esztergom, where he had been sent after being wounded in the war. Did the incident make the photographer think of his own recent injuries? The farmer who owned the horse was lucky that it remained for use in farming and had not been conscripted for war. All three people on the scene probably hoped that the horse would arise unharmed. Rather than provide the answer, Kertész left us with an image of hope.
