Description

Kertész served in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I. It was part of the Central Powers that surrounded and occupied Romania during much of 1918. Kertész noted that the man in this picture, presumably a soldier, was one of a group which “had come up by train from a ship on the Black Sea.” He rests wearily by his wagon, watching a mother dog lick her pup
