Danny Lyon was granted unprecedented permission to document the Texas prison system from the inside.

Description

Over 14 months in 1967-1968 Lyon photographed throughout six prisons. Prisoners are often confined up to 23 hours per day in these solitary confinement cells. Lyon wrote about the photographs resulted from this project,"I tried with whatever power I had to make a picture of imprisonment as distressing as I knew it to be in reality."
