Did You Know?

Woodblock printing in color reached a height in China in the 1600s to 1700s. The prints were executed by means of sets of separate blocks, each carved to print a different color.

Description

“Beautiful women” (meiren) was a popular subject in prints from Suzhou, a city that set trends in fashion and art. This print is from a set of Four Beauties representing the Four Seasons, along with CMA 2025.48, CMA 2025.50, and CMA 2025.51.
A vertically oriented multicolor woodblock print depicts a woman and children on a terrace. On our left, a woman with a light skin tone wearing a dark jacket and white skirt arranges lotus flowers in a vase while a child in a green vest stands nearby. To our right, another child crawls on a wooden platform. In the center, a large potted plant sits beneath a hanging lantern against a background of pillars.
