Description

The Pancake Woman exemplifies Rembrandt's observation of daily life. The scene includes closely observed details, such as the child on the right who gazes thoughtfully into the frying pan and the toddler in the foreground holding his pancake out of reach of a hungry dog who chases him.
A vertically oriented black ink print depicts a group in frenetic cross-hatching gathered around a seated woman cooking. Centrally located, she wears a dark cap and fur-trimmed coat, holding a long-handled pan over a stove. To our right, a man in a wide hat laughs. In the foreground, a child crouches near a dog while other figures blend into the background. Rembrandt's name and date appear at the bottom.
