Description

Born in Constantinople to a Syrian father and Armenian mother, Sébah opened a photography studio there in either the late 1850s or ’60s. This carte de visite, a small, inexpensive photographic format developed in France and meant to be left as a calling card or collected, attests to the rapid and potent global spread of photographic technology, formats, and conventions in the mid-1800s.
A vertically oriented albumen print depicts a man with light skin, wavy hair, and a thick mustache standing in profile. He wears a dark coat and patterned bow tie. Beside him, a fluffy white dog stands on its hind legs atop an ornate wooden table with deep, carved scrollwork. Red block letters at the bottom read "P. SEBAH, PHOT." The subjects emerge from a smooth, neutral-toned studio backdrop.
