Description

Two studio portraits of this sitter were included in the album; the other one was acquired by the Museum Rietberg in Zurich, Switzerland. Neither photograph was captioned, and the sitter remains unidentified. He almost certainly commissioned these two portraits and may be the person who ordered and chose the images for the album. Its owner would not need to label their own likeness. However, many who create albums do just that to ensure they are known to future generations of viewers.
A vertically oriented albumen print with an arched top depicts a seated person with a light skin tone. Facing our left, they wear a dark, double-breasted coat accented by a small flower and crisp white cuffs. A thick, dark beard frames their face. Their hands rest in their lap, loosely clutching a pair of gloves. The person sits in a decorative chair against a dark background, with light-colored trousers visible below.
