Description

Children’s “fancy dress” or costume parties were also popular among the British during the Victorian era. Fairy tales inspired a number of the costumes shown here, including Little Red Riding Hood with basket and cape, Little Miss Muffet with a milking stool and bucket, and Little Bo Beep and her shepherd’s crook. Note the dog peeking out behind the girl on the right.
A horizontally oriented sepia-toned photograph depicts ten children with medium-light skin tones in costumes. They stand and sit on a rug before an ivy-covered building. On our left, a child holds a bucket. In the center, a taller girl stands holding a rod. To our right, a child in a white dress holds a staff. Two toddlers sit on the rug in the foreground. They wear elaborate headwear and somber expressions.
