Description

This Roman marble sculpture from the collection of the Louvre shows Silenus holding the infant Dionysus. The museum acquired in 1807 and it is still on view there today.
A vertically oriented albumen print depicts a light-toned marble sculpture of Silenus, a nude bearded man, cradling the infant Dionysus. Silenus leans against a tree trunk draped with cloth and grapevines, holding the nude child across his chest. The infant reaches one arm toward the man's face. The sculpture stands on a circular base atop a tall rectangular pedestal, centered against a dark background.
