Description

Lieutenant Colonel Henry Dixon arrived in India in 1842 as part of the British colonial forces. When he took up the new art of photography his subjects were the temples and historic monuments of South India. This photograph shows a hill station taken from the plateau above the town; its high vantage point elucidates the town’s layout and highlights its principal structures.
A horizontally oriented light paper mount features a central sepia photograph with an arched top. From a rocky foreground, the terrain slopes toward a temple complex and village in the middle ground. Scattered trees surround the settlement, while rugged, hazy mountains fill the background. Below the image, a decorative label and printed text in the lower right identify the location as Bhoga Narasimha Swamy's temple in Mysore.
