Description

This hand-tinted portrait photograph is a modern example of a tradition in Indian painting that extends back to the mid-1800s. Having a photograph hand painted required an extra charge, but made the portraits more lifelike and endowed them with the status of a luxury item, akin to painted portraiture.
A vertical hand-colored silver print depicts a woman with medium skin tone, her torso turned slightly to our right while looking out at us. She wears a gray sari and a translucent veil patterned in white. A red bindi sits on her forehead, along with a pearl necklace, nose stud, and yellow watch. Her hands rest in her lap with green bangles and rings. The image has scalloped edges and a brown border.
