Description

Each of the prints in the series Thirty-six Elegant Selections features a woman from a different time period, as befits an artist who was interested in history painting. Most of the prints are set in the Edo period (1615–1868). Mizuno Toshikata was a favored student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892), and took over his post as a newspaper illustrator.
A vertically oriented woodblock print depicts a woman sitting on a wooden veranda, looking right toward a crescent moon and bird. Fine lines define her profile and orange kimono with blue patterns. To our right, white flowers bloom near a bamboo fence. Behind her, stippled gray shapes suggest a forested hill. Japanese calligraphy fills two boxes at the top left, while red seals mark the bottom corners of the composition.
