Description

Each of the prints in the series Thirty-six Elegant Selections features a woman from a different time period, as befits an artist who was interested in history painting. Most of the prints are set in the Edo period (1615–1868). Mizuno Toshikata was a favored student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892), and took over his post as a newspaper illustrator.
A vertically oriented woodblock print depicts a woman with light skin tone in a patterned red and green kimono. She stands at the center, holding a puppet aloft against a large blue and white drape. Behind the fabric, two men peer outward. A blooming cherry tree fills the upper background, scattering pink petals across the scene. Japanese calligraphy occupies two boxes at the upper left, while a lacquer box rests in the foreground.
