Description

Each of the prints in the series Thirty-six Elegant Selections features a woman from a different time period, as befits an artist who was interested in history painting. Most of the prints are set in the Edo period (1615–1868). Mizuno Toshikata was a favored student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892), and took over his post as a newspaper illustrator.
A vertically oriented woodblock print depicts a woman with light skin tone kneeling on a green floor, playing a long stringed instrument. She wears a purple, floral-patterned robe over a red sash and leans forward with downcast eyes. Behind her stands a shoji screen, while to our left, a garden features a stone lantern and a flowering branch. Calligraphy appears at the top right, with signatures and red seals along the edges.
