Description

The print series Gekkō’s Miscellaney wanders through a variety of genres. This print captures an agricultural scene of women gathering bracken. Ōgata Gekkō distinguished himself as a younger artist in the first exhibition of the Painting Appreciation Society (Kangakai) in 1885. He went on to earn prizes at world’s fairs and expositions in both the US and Europe.
A vertically oriented woodblock print on beige paper depicts people gathering plants in a rolling landscape. In the foreground, a woman with light skin tone crouches, reaching for greens. Beside her, another woman leans forward, wearing a white kimono and purple headcloth. Further back, two figures wearing straw hats walk up a pale green hill. Muted green, tan, and blue tones fill the scene, with Japanese calligraphy at the top left.
