Description

The print series Gekkō’s Miscellaney wanders through a variety of genres. This print captures a view of a famous place in Tokyo, Inokashira, associated with the water deity Benzaiten. Ōgata Gekkō distinguished himself as a younger artist in the first exhibition of the Painting Appreciation Society (Kangakai) in 1885. He went on to earn prizes at world’s fairs and expositions in both the US and Europe.
A woodblock print depicts a landscape with a person in a blue floral kimono and red sash walking along a path. Thatched-roof buildings flank a stream, while stone stairs rise toward a hillside dense with dark green trees and white blossoms. Japanese calligraphy sits in vertical boxes at the top right, complemented by red seal marks and signatures. Delicate outlines and soft color washes define the tranquil, lush scene.
