Description

The bullock cart, an ancient and once prevalent means of transportation in India, is still widely used in rural areas today. Here, a driver and his staff wait for a passenger. This occupational image, created by British colonial photographers for European audiences, offered armchair travelers a European view of local Indian life and customs.
A horizontally oriented sepia-toned photograph depicts two light-colored bullocks hitched to a wooden cart. A man with a medium skin tone sits under a fabric canopy on our left, facing right. Beside him, a bearded man with a medium-dark skin tone sits at the front. To our right, a third man stands facing left, touching a bullock's head. They wear turbans and light-colored wraps. An ornate stone building forms the background.
