Did You Know?

Next to the tree are the buildings of a monastery and a whitewashed, dome-shaped structure with pointed spire, called a stupa.

Description

This image may actually show the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree planted in 288 BC in Mahamewna Gardens, Anuradhapura, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Grown from a cutting of the tree in India under which Buddha attained enlightenment, it is one of the most sacred Buddhist relics in Sri Lanka.
A horizontally oriented sepia photograph depicts an exterior view of a temple complex. On the left, a weathered stone structure features four arched openings beneath dense trees. To the right, a tiled roof building stands before a large, white conical stupa topped with a pointed spire. Two thin tree trunks lean across the middle ground, and weathered stone steps appear in the foreground. Dark foliage contrasts against the light stone.
