Did You Know?

The rosy sky was an imaginative addition by the printers, as this print is based on a black-and-white photograph.

Description

This Hall of Private Audiences was built by Shah Jahan, who commissioned the Taj Mahal. There, he and the succeeding Mughal emperors met with courtiers and important guests. Several men in European dress exit the hall, while men in native garb labor in the lush gardens. The tiny figures emphasize the building’s grand scale.
A horizontally oriented photochrom photograph looks across a symmetrical garden landscape toward a white stone pavilion. In the foreground, dozens of small potted plants line crisp stone paths. To the right, a dark wooden frame stands. A lush green archway of vines spans the central walkway. In the background, the five arched pavilion with two small domes sits under a pale peach sky, framed by dense tropical foliage and tall trees.
