Did You Know?

It took 1,444,000 builders eight years to build the sandstone fort, which was completed in 1573.

Description

Known as the Red Fort because of the rosy sandstone used to build it; the fort was a walled city that served as home to the Mughal emperors until 1638. The height and massiveness of the walls are emphasized by the inclusion of the Indian travelers resting in the foreground.
A horizontally oriented photochrom depicts a sprawling red sandstone fort stretching across the background under a pale blue sky. In the foreground, a dusty clearing is filled with people in white and red robes tending to cattle near piles of golden hay. Two domed towers punctuate the center of the long, notched wall. To the left, leafy green trees frame a small cart, while the landscape is cast in muted, warm tones.
