Did You Know?

While the Indian leopard is now a vulnerable species, 19th-century hunters would not have worried about sustaining its population.

Description

Elaborate big game hunts were a prestigious pastime for the Indians and colonials under the British Raj. This trophy has been laid out for the camera so that its sharp teeth and long tail are visible.
A horizontally oriented sepia-toned albumen print depicts a leopard lying on its side within an oval frame. Its head rests on dry grass to the right with eyes closed and mouth slightly open, while its spotted body and tail extend toward the left. Dense foliage and branches fill the background. The oval is set against a stained rectangular mount, creating a monochrome image with warm, muted tones.
