Description

Although Fernand Khnopff was best known for depicting femmes fatales—threatening or dangerous women—this drawing offers a personalized and intimate depiction of its sitter, Augustine Bulteau. A prolific novelist and writer, Bulteau hosted a regular salon for artists such as Manet and Toulouse-Lautrec. She appears dressed conservatively but fashionably, holding her place in a book as if interrupted while reading.
A vertically oriented black chalk drawing depicts a woman with light skin tone from the waist up, facing slightly left while looking toward us with a somber expression. Her dark hair is piled in a voluminous updo. Crossing her arms, she holds a book. She wears a dark, high-collared dress with buttons along the sleeves. Soft, blended shading defines her figure against the tan vellum background. A wide, lighter border frames the drawing.
