Description

According to Hindu mythology, Muchukunda, the man dressed in saffron, fell asleep in a cave and slept for thousands of years. When he finally woke up, Krishna appeared and advised him to perform penance to cleanse the accumulated sins and attain liberation. He went to Mount Gandhamadana, on India’s east coast, to practice atonement.
A horizontally oriented gum tempera and ink painting depicts King Muchukunda, an older man with a light skin tone and white beard, and Krishna, a man with blue skin, walking toward a craggy gray mountain. Muchukunda wears a golden crown and orange patterned garment, grasping a staff. Krishna follows in a crown and pink patterned garment. A pale blue sky hangs over the grassy ground and sparse trees, all framed by a red border.
