Did You Know?

The costume of the handmaiden holding the mirror is inspired by older Chamba paintings.

Description

A lady, dressed in white below the waist, admires herself in a mirror held by a handmaiden. Three other ladies attend to her toilette. She stands on a large wooden stool and raises her elbow high to adjust her earrings, providing the beholder with a glimpse of her round breasts. Ewers and water pots can be seen in the foreground.
A vertically oriented tempera and gold painting depicts five women with light to medium skin tones. Centrally, a semi-nude woman stands atop an ornate octagonal platform. To the left, two attendants hold a mirror and tray; to the right, others offer a basket or kneel at her feet. Below, golden vessels rest among flowers. An orange arc rises behind them beneath a dark blue band, all within a wide red border.
