The deer are depicted in a pair to highlight the Nayika’s separation.

Description

Vasakasajja has been described as Nayika who arranges the bed for making love. She is seated on a bed of leaves by a pond, anxiously waiting for her lover. The painter has faithfully followed the poet’s description of the scene and depicted the fair-complexioned Nayika radiating against the otherwise dark surrounding, illuminating the tryst.
A vertically oriented painting features a central figure in a vibrant red skirt and lavender top, seated on a cluster of green leaves. She lifts a blue veil against a dark sky. In the lower vignettes, two tan deer flank a stream of pink lotus flowers. Trees with golden accents and foliage created with repeated dashes surround the figure. A thick red border frames the layered, stylized composition.
