Description

This scene is set at the end of the Hindu epic Ramayana, after Rama returns from 14 years of exile in the forest. During Rama’s time of exile, Ravana abducted Rama’s wife Sita. Rama gathered an army of monkeys and bears, and rescued Sita. The chiefs of the monkey and bear armies pay their respects to the reunited royal couple.
A vertically oriented gum tempera painting depicts a blue-skinned man and a woman seated beneath a pink canopy. To our left, figures with monkey and bear heads stand with palms pressed together. To our right, four figures in vibrant robes attend them; one waves a white whisk. Figures have medium-light skin tones except the central man. A vertical gold and blue frame borders the scene. Surface damage is visible on the bear and border.
