Description

A large portion of this composition is dominated by the episode of Vishnu’s manifestation as Trivikrama in Raja Bali’s sacrifice. Vishnu stands monumentally with his one foot on the ground and the other foot reaching to heaven where Brahma washes Vishnu’s foot with Ganges water in devotion. Raja Bali is shown giving the sacrifice to Vamana, the brahmin incarnation of Vishnu.
A horizontally oriented tempera and ink painting depicts a central four-armed blue deity with a gold halo raising a leg across a green landscape. A four-headed figure pours water onto the foot. Figures with medium skin tones occupy surrounding vignettes: two inside a building on the left, one prone on the grass, two tending a fire, and two seated under a white canopy. Black Devanagari script fills a top yellow band.
